About Me

Verla looking off to the rightLet’s face it. You’re probably on this page because you’re curious. Who’s writing this blog and why? What are her credentials? If that’s important to you, click here.

Frankly, I would rather tell you about who I am rather than what I do:

  • I’m passionate about God, my family, and deep relationships. My credo is: Live like you mean it!
  • I love all kinds of music and books, walks in beautiful natural settings, driving my convertible with the top down, forensic shows on TV, and sculpting. I’m also a foodie and love to try new cuisines.
  • In my next life, I want to be either a Master Chef or a killer ballroom dancer, three inches taller, and 20 lbs. lighter. That’s why I’m glad this life is just a dress rehearsal. There’s still time.
  • I hate racism, slander, hypocrisy, people who give up, and people who yell at and hit their kids in grocery stores. Pick on somebody your own size.
  • I’m really big on civility and respect in both public and private discourse. It’s not hard. Repeat after me: It’s a conversation, not a war.
  • I embrace change like it’s an octopus. I don’t find it much fun, I can’t easily get my arms around it, but I can’t ignore it. It’s bigger than me.
  • I’ve learned a job is not a life. Life lasts longer. It deserves more attention.
  • I’m not as good a listener as I’d like to be. I’m working on it. However, I do know how to shut up when necessary and solitude is one of my favorite activities.
  • I worry too much what people think. For example, one day, at an interminable stoplight, I got mad at myself for worrying whether you’d like this blog. The light turned green and I said, “Time’s up, babe. Go!” I did. Here we are.
  • I care about people on the fringe of faith, who haven’t been invited into the conversation. If that’s you, you’re welcome here.
  • I’m not the person I was 5, 10, or 20 years ago. If you knew me then, pull up a chair and let’s get caught up. People change. You’ve changed, too. That’s the point.
  • I overdo metaphors and clichés and can never remember where all the commas go.  I was an English major so I can write the old-fashioned way if I must. But c’mon, people, let’s worry about things that matter, like the fact that 19% of children in America live in poverty and 1 in 50 are homeless!
  • I believe there will be dogs in heaven. In fact, I’ll bet God has a dog. A really BIG dog.
  • Life interrupts some of our best intentions. So, from time to time, this blog has paused. In the meantime, there are still plenty of posts archived here with spiritual nuggets to give your heart a boost. I hope you’ll also check out my latest book, REVOLT OF A WELL-INTENTIONED LIFE, THE BACKROADS ADVENTURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING, available on Amazon. You’ll find more about it elsewhere on this site.

  1. Verla — how fun to reconnect! Can’t wait to continue to read your blog. Hope you are doing well. It’s been many, many years since we connected via Today’s Christian Woman magazine. (But let’s not count.) Blessings!

Love your About Me Page, witty, hilarious. I too agree that our loved pets will hopefully be in heaven. We love and miss them terribly. How can these precious pets of ours not be there. God is a loving Father to us. I do hope I’ll see my kitty Tiger there!

Hi I am Stwphanie and I just found your blog by rereading Women at the Well. It is so lovely to read the blog of someone who seems very down to earth and honest about their life and most importantly their relationship with God. Thank you for creating this blog. 😊
